Top 5 social media tips for crafters!
I have a love to hate relationship with social media. I love that it's such an important way to speak to customers and grow communities and businesses, but it's also a lot of work.
As a crafter - social media can be ANOTHER thing to add to your to-do list. It's exhausting! After you've finished making your customers orders at 11.59pm at night after a full day of work, checked your inventory for the next day, cleaned up all those vinyl scraps - social media is probably the last thing you're thinking of. There's good news though, it doesn't have to be! Here are my 5 hacks and tips to do the socials.
1.You do you. And only do you.
Don’t do anyone else! Just because everyone is doing a sale, taking about how great their product is, pushing their product everywhere - doesn’t mean you have to! Remember people come to social media to chill out. Try and bring them along on your journey. Did you have a win? Tell them! Made a mistake? Tell them! Hate coriander? Maybe someone doesn’t like it too. 😂
Also, people can spot a fake miles away. Full stop. I've lost count of the times I've had baby vomit on my shirt and a birds nest on my head.. yet appeared on stories to tell everyone a win/loss I've had. Perfect example: When I had to give an arm and a leg to air ship my pre-orders in. The outpouring of love was amazing - and I want to say that it was the baby vomit did it 😂, but it's more that I was genuine about the issues I was having. I even had people wanting to chip in to pay their share of the air shipping fees - amazing!
2. People know when you’re selling to them.
And newsflash, it makes them not want to buy even more! So, don't sell to them. Show them what you are working on within your business, and they will more likely buy from you later. If you want to know more - I did a whole podcast on it. Visit here.
3. Process is content!
But I know what you’ll say- what if I give away my “trade secret” and then others start to do it my way?
4. Low fi is fine, it's actually better.
I shoot all of my content on my iPhone. I shoot it in natural light, in front of a plain background (usually a white wall) and with the least touching up as possible (that includes filters).
I do this because of point one and two - and I don't have millions of dollars to put towards a marketing budget (though that would be nice) and to hire a pro photographer with a library of lighting equipment.
Most of the time I head outside or I open the window to let natural light in and take my photos.
Remember - newsfeeds are full of photos from friends and families etc - they don't have professional photographers either (well most don't!) so we should try to fit IN with the feed, not stand out (for the wrong reasons)
5. Batch create that content
Batch it real good.
By batching I mean - set aside one hour to plan, design, and schedule in your content. I can do a weeks worth of content in that time. Then have a look at your analytics and see when your audiences are most online - then you know your peak posting time, and you can start scheduling your content then!
I use Later.com to do this - it's a free website that allows you to plan and create your content and schedule it to go live without you having to post it yourself. It's a game changer when mumlife takes over and its meltdown central when your audiences are online - for me its 7-8pm. Yup, right on witching hour! Can you imagine me telling my toddler "Hold on bub, I know you're having a meltdown but I gotta post to my socials" - yeah I don't think it will go down well 😂
If you’re thinking: sure these 5 tips are great, but content ideas is where I get stuck - I got you.
