QUICK Q&A WITH KRIS MCKEE 📝
Can you tell me a little bit about your business?
We are an independent florist business based in the inner west of Sydney. I create everything from single arrangements to full wedding and event florals.
I don't have a bricks and mortar store, I create my magic in my garage (aka dungeon lol) and use my website as my store. I have a strong focus on creating products that are both beautiful and original, and always aim to design and produce floral arrangements that bring joy.
I create with fresh and dried flowers and actually dry many of my materials myself.
I also make soy candles using only premium soy wax and fragrances. I love creating new scents, new labels, new fun!!
I feel it's extremely important to think and produce with sustainability as a focus. I search for products to use within my business that are made ethically and consciously. Floristry has historically not always served our planet well, for example the overuse of plastic wraps, floral foams etc- but things are definitely changing and I am doing my bit to reduce plastic within my business, avoid the use of floral foam whenever I can, recycle and reuse, and dispose of my green waste correctly.
I also love to purchase locally grown florals whenever I can.
The magic of flowers is that they can instantly change and recharge a mood, they’re quite powerful that way.
I have been nurse for almost 20 years both here in Australia and in the United Kingdom, but last year decided it was time to finally listen to that inner voice screaming (and oh boy, it was screaming) at me to be creative and pursue a long awaited goal to build my own business doing something that brings me personal joy.
Working in healthcare for the past 2 years has been so incredibly challenging mentally and physically, and it was definitely time for me to give myself a change of pace! I started studying floristry at the start of the pandemic after attending couple of short courses and then threw myself in the deep end and enrolled in my cert III, I'm now finished and qualified.
Providing comfort and care for people is a nursing trait that I feel I have carried into my creative pursuits, and I believe I have a thorough understanding that sometimes it’s the very small personal touches that can have the biggest impact.
What are 5 random things about you?
1. I studied Opera singing when I first went to Uni! Yep, I was going to be an opera singer. But my early 20's self realised the Arts are hard to crack into so I thought I'd study nursing on the side as my back up career! The back up career took over as tends to happen when there are bills to be paid.
2. I lived in London for almost 8 years. Traveled, worked my butt off and had a great time. I still feel a massive pull toward London, maybe it was my forever home in a previous life.
3. I also love to paint, watercolours are my favourite medium. I don't paint as often as I should.
4. I have scuba dived between tectonic plates in glacial water in Iceland. I was amazing! It was sooooo cold!
5. I am a huge David Bowie fan! HUGE
How long have you been crafting? When did you start?
I've been crafting in one way or another for as long as I remember. Flowers just happen to be the medium I have gravitated toward at this point in my life. Flowers have been my thing for the last 2 years, and I love it.
What are your favourite things to craft?
Unique bouquets, installations for weddings and events, my soy candles. Anything that means I get to be creative and let inspiration lead the way!
Whats your number 1 hack/tip for anyone else starting out with business?
Tip! Just give it a go. If there is a desire and a passion then trust your gut and jump in. It's hard work, but so personally rewarding. Make time for your mental health too, this is so important. Take breaks and switch off, recharge those creative batteries.
